The elements of passion and experience fuel Marilyn Keenan-Milligan's instruction with Collin College's Continuing Education department.
Keenan-Milligan, RPh., teaches pharmacy technician classes at Collin College. She builds her classes based on more than 30 years of experience as a pharmacist and healthcare manager.
In addition to this practical experience, she has many years of teaching experience from the University of Pittsburgh and Texas Tech University Health Science Center School.
"As a manager for many years, I have always been involved in teaching," Keenan-Milligan said. "I definitely enjoy being able to teach my current students about the rewards of a career in pharmacy. These rewards include helping others to achieve better health as well their own personal job security. My profession has helped me achieve many things in life and I am fortunate to be able to pass some of that knowledge to others, whether they are embarking on their first job or re-careering to something more stable and/or more interesting."
Keenan-Milligan earned her bachelor's degree in pharmacy at the University of Pittsburgh and her master's degree in healthcare administration from Texas Woman's University. She also studied at the Leonard Davis Institute for Healthcare Economics at the Wharton School of Business at the University of Pennsylvania as a SmithKline Beecham fellow.
"To me, lifelong learning means acquiring new knowledge every day of one's life. It includes the opportunity to address challenges that life throws at you with new, more-effective approaches towards finding solutions," she said.
"My students tell me that I am patient and enthusiastic. Most of them come to our program knowing only one type of pharmacy practice -- retail pharmacy setting," Keenan-Milligan said. "I open their eyes to the tremendous amount of other options they have related to practice sites, including inpatient settings, industry and many diverse outpatient businesses that provide pharmacy services."
