Anyone can purchase a camera. But it’s professionals like Terry Wier that teach that person how to use it.
Wier is an instructor with Collin College’s Continuing Education where he teaches a host of photography classes. He teaches students more than just F-stops and framing, but also the subtleties and lessons learned by a renowned photographer. Wier has 30 years of experience in the photography business, with 20 years in New York and five years in Europe in the fashion and advertising industry. His clients have included Neiman Marcus, Estee Lauder and the Zales Corp., among many others.
“Most of the photography information in books and online is by ‘photo teachers’ who never had to make a living in the business,” Wier said. “Most of the photographers who are successful in the business do not have time to teach. There is a great difference between the work flow and usable information from the two viewpoints.”
“I have more than 30 years of professional business experience in New York City and Europe. Surviving that long requires skills that are not taught in most books.”
Wier is proud of the former students who have gone on and found success in the photography business with their own studios and experiences.
“Working with a professional in a class setting is as close as you can get to working in a real professional work atmosphere. Showing is different from telling,” Wier said. “The experience I share is the main key to student involvement, and the key to so many of my students making it into the professional photography business.”
