Placement Questions10. If I am unhappy with my English placement, may I re-take the English assessment?
10. Yes, you may, but usually the areas needing improvement show up again and again in a student's writing samples. Students are advised to take courses to build skills and then enter credit English courses with the expectation of doing well and thus building a strong GPA (grade point average).
11. I have been placed in ENGL 0315. What does that mean? Is that a credit course?
11. ENGL 0315 titled "Writing, Reading, and Reasoning" is a skills improvement course designed to help students reach competencies necessary for ENGL 1301. The course focuses on reading and writing medium length expository essays, with special emphasis on writing about issues arising from class readings. ENGL 0315 receives institutional credit but not transferable credit, and thus may not be used to satisfy the English requirements for an associateŐs degree.
12. I have been placed in Developmental Writing (English 0315) to improve my writing skills. May I also take English 1301 in the same semester?
12. Students placed in ENGL 0315 to improve their writing skills must complete the course successfully before entering ENGL 1301. To complete both courses in one semester, students should look for the Express sections of ENGL 0315 and ENGL 1301 to be offered beginning Fall 2004.
13. I am a very strong writer. May I test out of English 1301, for example, receive college credit for the course, and be placed into English 1302?
13. CCCCD awards college credit on the basis of the College Level Examination Program (CLEP) for first-year courses in English Composition. CLEP exams are given by appointment in the Testing Centers. Students who pass the ENGL 1301 CLEP exam receive credit on their transcript for ENGL 1301 and are eligible to enroll in ENGL 1302. For an appointment and information about fees to take the CLEP exam, call SCC Testing Center at 972-881-5922.
14. I am an international student. Although I have assessed into English 1301, I know I need special instruction to continue to improve my syntax, diction, and vocabulary? What should I do?
14. International students who assess into English 1301 can continue to improve their English skills by visiting the Writing Center regularly and/or by taking upper level English Second Language Writing (ESLW) and Grammar (ESLG) courses while taking English 1301. Also, beginning Fall 2004, students may wish to enroll in English 1301 for International Students to receive specialized instruction while completing the requirements for English 1301.
15. Why are students not allowed to take a sophomore literature class before or while taking English 1302?
15. ENGL 1302 is a prerequisite for sophomore literature courses because ENGL 1302 builds a studentŐs writing and critical thinking skills in argumentation, analysis, interpretation of various types of literature, extensive reading and writing, MLA documentation, study of research methods and materials, and preparation of a research paper. Students enrolling in sophomore literature courses are expected to have these skills.
16. May I take World Literature II before taking World Literature I or American Literature II before American Literature I?
16. Yes, students may take the survey literature classes in any order because the courses simply cover different time periods. For example, World Lit I (ENGL 2332) covers world literature from antiquity through the sixteenth century. World Lit II (ENGL 2333) covers world literature from the seventeenth century through the twentieth century. The two courses may be taken in any order.
17. May I take English 1302 and a sophomore literature class in the same semester?
17. Ę Students needing to complete both ENGL 1302 and a sophomore literature class in one semester should look for Express sections (XS1) wherein ENGL 1302 is offered the first eight weeks of a long semester and a sophomore literature class is offered the second eight weeks of the same semester.
18. If I discover that I am enrolled in a writing class above my skill level, may I transfer to another class?
18. Yes, for students who may be advised by their instructors the first week of classes that their skill levels may prove challenging for a course in which the student is enrolled, every effort will be made to help that student transfer to a course that more appropriately meets his/her needs and prepares the student to successfully take the course in a future semester.
