42. I see that a departmental final exam is required for the English 1301 course. What is the Departmental Final Exam for English 1301 like?

42. ENGL 1301 includes a Departmental Final Exam that instructors are asked to count as 20 % of the course grade. After a semester of writing numerous essays aided by instructor conferences, revisions, and visits to the Writing Center, the final exam is an in-class essay that allows a student to demonstrate his/her ability to take a general knowledge or experience-based topic and write a short essay that exhibits skills in organization, content, and mechanics. The Final Exam Essays are graded by the instructor and then submitted to the English Department Office as a matter of record.

43. May I take an English course with a pass-fail grade option?

43. Non-degree seeking students may select a pass/fail grade option for foreign languages, sign language, and creative writing courses (ENGL 2307 and ENGL 2308). This option is not available for students working toward a degree plan or intending to transfer to another institution. To select a pass/fail grade, students must complete the appropriate form at the Admissions and Records Office before the termÕs Census Date.

45. Does CCCCD offer a good grammar course?

45. Yes, CCCCD offers ENGL 0310, a grammar and sentence construction course, each semester. There are no prerequisites for this course. Students often benefit from taking ENGL 0310 at the same time that they are taking other English courses such as ENGL 1301, ENGL 1302, or ENGL 2311.

46. If I do not do well in an English class, may I re-take the class in order to earn a higher grade?

46. Students who do not do well in an English class may re-take the class one time in order to work for a higher grade. The most recent grade will be the grade figured into a studentÕs GPA (grade point average) even though both grades will appear on the student's transcript.

47. I have had some personal problems near the end of the semester. May I qualify for a grade of Incomplete and finish the course later?

47. Students who are unable to successfully complete a course may ask their instructors for an Incomplete Grade Contract. Generally, students qualify for an Incomplete if the student has attended the class regularly, has completed 80 % of the course work, and is present to sign the Incomplete Grade Contract form. The Incomplete Grade Contract specifies the remaining course work and a due date for completing the course work. If a student completes the work by the due date, the instructor will grade the completed work, determine a course grade, and then submit a Change of Grade form to the Chair of the Department and to the Dean for approvals. The student will be notified of the grade change.
