After completing the above 37 credit hours, the student can take the SLNG Language Assessment for program exit and receive a certificate;

OR,  the student can decide to pursue the AAS degree upon completion of the 37 credit hour certificate. If you decide to pursue the AAS degree, you should attend the group orientation session where a secondary packet will be available to you, and take the Language Assessment for degree program entrance. The assessment is an exit point for the certificate, or an entrance point for the degree program. Regardless of either choice, students must take their state licensure exam in order to interpret in the state of Texas.

Interpreter Preparation Program for the Deaf (SLNG/SGNL)

STUDENT INFORMATION SHEET

  1. COLLEGE ADMISSIONS PROCESS - Admissions, Assessment, Advising.
  2. SPECIAL ADMISSIONS REQUIREMENTS FOR ACCEPTANCE INTO THE AAS DEGREE PROGRAM
    1. Demonstration of the following minimum competencies:
      Within one year prior to AAS degree program entry, assessment into:
      READ 0310 or higher
      ENGL 0305 or higher
      MATH 0305 or higher
      Scores must be current. (If scores are more than a year old, you will be asked to take the assessments again.)
    2. Successfully complete or demonstrate competencies in the 37 CREDIT-HOUR CERTIFICATE COURSES with a 2.5 GPA or higher.
    3. Completion of the Interpreter Preparation Program packet (SLNG packet), which includes:
      Completion of the SLNG Application Form for entrance consideration.
      Official transcripts (if not submitted before) sent to the Admissions and Records Office at CCCC.
      Current Reading, Writing, and Math Assessment scores.
    4. Recommendation from the SLNG committee. The committee will assess the following items: ASL skills, interpreting skills, knowledge of basic linguistic information and the TCDHH & RID Code of Ethics for interpreters. {Students should attend a group orientation session before the Language Assessment, where they will be given sample assessment forms.}
    5. Students must have 2.5 GPA or higher in SGNL/SLNG courses to enter the SLNG degree program. Once accepted into the program, students must maintain a 3.0 GPA in all SLNG courses.
  3. The Language Assessment will be videotaped. Students must pass the assessment with 75% or higher in the Receptive, Expressive, Code of Ethics, and Grammar and Culture portions.
  4. Upon Language Assessment Committee approval, students will receive an “Assessment Results” form, which provides a break-down of scores and provides evidence of acceptance or non-acceptance into the degree program.
  5. Students may not file a degree plan until the Language Assessment Committee has given written approval regarding entrance into the degree program. If students need verification for Financial Aid purposes, they are to contact the Financial Aid office and the Program coordinator.
    1. If the student is not seeking a degree, a 36 credit-hour “Interpreting Apprentice” certificate is available. This certificate does not have a Special Admissions Entrance requirement, however, there is a Language Assessment for program exit purposes only. Please refer to the current CCCC catalog, and/or see checklist on page 1. NOTE: The Interpreting Apprentice Certificate is NOT a license to interpret in the state of Texas.
  6. For the AAS degree program, call numbers for upper level SLNG courses must be given to students by the program coordinator upon approval from the Language Assessment Committee.
  7. The Language Assessment Committee will meet 2 times a year, in April and December. When you have completed all of the special admissions requirements and feel ready, please call the program coordinator to have your name put on the Language Assessment list.
  8. Reciprocity of SLNG/SGNL: SGNL courses are transferable as a foreign language if the transfer institution recognizes ASL as a foreign language. Check with your particular institution or discipline to be certain. Be advised that SLNG prefixes usually will not transfer to universities.
  9. Lab is required for all courses except SLNG 1447 - Deaf Culture. All courses require attending Outside Communication Activities, such as Deaf Celebration, Open-Captioned movies, Deaf bowling, etc.
  10. The AAS degree will be awarded upon successful completion of the required 71 credit hours and Program Exit requirements, which consists of a mock evaluation. Exit competency expectations include:
    1. Interpret between 100-120 words per minute.
    2. Transliterate between 100-120 words per minute.
    3. Voice interpret with 85%-100% accuracy.
    4. Knowledge of the Code of Ethics
    5. Knowledge of the grammar of ASL.
  11. If you would like to obtain information about state licensing of interpreters, you may contact TCDHH/BEI in Austin at 512-451-8494. If you already have this information and would like to submit an application, you may pick up a TCDHH/BEI application from the SLNG coordinator.
NOTE: All certificate students should file a TASP waiver form with Admissions and the TASP office.

Degree-seeking students should check on their individual TASP status with Advising, Admissions, and the TASP office.
