The Interpreter Preparation Program (IPPD) offers a 34-credit hour Interpreter Trainee Certificate and a 68-credit hour, Associates of Applied Science degree. Our goal is to provide a focused and balanced education for students whose goal is to become a Sign Language Interpreter. With an emphasis on receptive skills, the program concentrates on synthesizing the study of American Sign Language (ASL), Deaf Culture, and Interpreting as a profession. Interpreting requires excellence in ASL and a thorough knowledge of oneself and one's ethics because interpreters are privy to confidential information. The Collin County Community College Interpreter Preparation Program has a higher number of Deaf teachers and lab assistants than non-Deaf teachers and lab assistants, allowing the students the opportunity to become fluent in ASL and to develop culturally-appropriate behaviors and responses.

The career opportunities for persons with an IPPD Associate of Applied Science degree are varied and widespread and include educational, medical, legal, mental health and community-based employment. Because of the passage of the Americans with Disabilities Act, there is currently a national and statewide shortage of interpreters. Moreover, the quality as well as the quantity of the interpreters that the market demands is increasing. In addition, many interpreters are self-employed and work as independent contractors for various corporations and government service agencies.

See the current CCCCD catalog for Recommended Electives. This will provide the student with a 34 credit-hour Interpreter Trainee Certificate. After completion of the certificate requirements, students may opt to take the IPPD Assessment to exit the program and attempt to pass state licensure, or take the IPPD Assessment as an entrance point into the IPPD AAS degree program.

After completion of the above, a recommendation from the IPPD Language Assessment Committee and a personal interview to assess ASL skills is required. The committee is comprised of 4 individuals - 2 Deaf individuals who are consumers of an interpreter's services and 2 certified interpreters who will be peers and colleagues of the new interpreter.
