Writing an Effective Application or Scholarship Essay

Writing an effective essay could be the difference in getting into the college of your choice. This workshop will cover many helpful strategies and tips of writing an effective application or scholarship essay.
The workshop’s presenter, Marilyn Kaufman, is a well-known speaker and expert on college admissions and serves on The Princeton Review National College Counselor Advisory Board.
Kaufman also is an adjunct professor at SMU-in-Legacy, where she teaches a course on college planning and is a frequent contributor to CBS, ABC and Fox television stations on issues relating to college admission, standardized testing and the college application process.
What Parents Need to Know About College

Over dessert and coffee, a panel of current college parents from a variety of universities and colleges will share their experiences and advice about what to expect as a college parent.

Preparing for the Real World: Employers Speak Out

This workshop features a panel of managers from local area employers who will discuss what you need to learn in high school and college in order to succeed at the workplace. Students, find out about the skills, knowledge and attitudes that you will need to learn in order to start on your career tracks.
Princeton Review: SAT Strategies

Find out all you need to know about the SAT and ACT in this informational session. A Princeton Review instructor will lead you through a few techniques to help you on these high stakes admissions tests. Where will your scores take you?
Exploring Majors: How to Choose

What do you plan to major in? Do you know what your choices are? When it comes to selecting a major, many students are uncertain about how to make the right decision. This workshop will provide you with a plan on how to match majors with interests and career plans, and how to find the best colleges for those majors.
Destination College: The Parent Workshop

This popular workshop will provide parents with the essentials of planning and preparing for their students’ college experience. The fast-paced sessions, presented by a variety of speakers, will cover topics such as timelines, choosing colleges, applying to college and paying for college. Join us for an entertaining and informative evening. Dinner will be provided. Attendees will receive a copy of the 2009 Parent Resource Guide.
Princeton Review: SAT/ACT Mini-Assessment
10 a.m. – noon, Saturday, Feb. 21, 2009
Preston Ridge Campus (PRC) Event Center, 9700 Wade Blvd., Frisco
Take the Princeton Review Assessment which is a combination of questions representing the SAT and ACT. By using this tool, students can determine which test they might be better suited for. Princeton Review representatives will explain the differences between the tests.
Collin College Pre-admission Partnerships: Transferring to Universities

Hear from representatives of the institutions with whom Collin College has pre-admission partnership agreements. Details will be provided about their partnership programs in a panel setting. Afterwards, the representatives will have information tables and be available for individual questions.

Transition to College for Students with Special Needs

Co-sponsored with Collin College’s ACCESS (support for students with disabilities) program, this workshop provides information to students, parents, school representatives, government agencies and community organizations regarding policies and services for college students with special needs. Getting Started at Collin College: For new Collin students

Are you planning on attending Collin College in the summer or fall 2009? If so, this workshop walks you through each step of the process to get started, from admissions to testing to advising.
