Collin College hosts Earth Day Celebration on April 15-16

Collin College, in coordination with the city of Frisco, will host an Earth Day Celebration on April 15-16 at the Preston Ridge Campus, 9700 Wade Blvd., in Frisco.

The event is free and open to the public and it will focus on the theme “It is easy to be green! Recycle - Reuse - Renew our Planet.”

Attendees will have an opportunity to get henna tattoos, view hybrid vehicles, take a trip on a “Segway,” see a “found art” installation, listen to Native American music, learn about green building, cleaning, rain barrels and hybrid cars, among many other activities.

Vendors include Body Shop, Calloway's Nursery, Chinese Calligrapher Chia-Hsuing Ho, Corgan Architecture, Frisco Humane Society, Green Mountain Energy, Hearts of Cedar Native American Flute Circle of Dallas, Henna Artist Sanober Moosa, Herbal & Aroma Therapies, Natural Resource Defense Council, Pat Lobb Toyota of McKinney, Pollock Paper, the Sierra Club, Tandus Carpeting, Texas Master Naturalists - Blackland Prairie Chapter, North Texas Water District, Wildcare Wildlife Rehabilitation, Stretches/Yoga with Michelle, Richardson Bike Shop, Counter Culture, Mavo Pavo and City of Frisco Environmental Services.

Numerous Recognized Student Organizations will be participating too. They include K5CCC, Obscura Photo Club, Student Lions Club, the National Technical Honor Society and the 3-D Art students.

Additionally, community members are encouraged to bring old eye glasses, old cell phones, gently used pairs of shoes and clothing, old telephone books, old printers and computer components to recycle.

Plus there will be giveaways from many of the vendors!

The event is hosted in coordination with the city of Frisco. The Preston Ridge Campus is located at 9700 Wade Blvd., in Frisco.


A schedule of events include:

Rock Concert and the movie, “The 11th Hour” – 4 p.m.-7:30 p.m., Tuesday, April 15 (Quad): The rock concert will be by Collin Student band White Tag. “The 11th Hour” explores the state of the global environment including visionary and practical solutions for restoring the planet’s ecosystems.

HAM Radio Shack Tour – 4 p.m.-5 p.m., Tuesday, April 15: See a demonstration of the K5CCC solar-powered HAM radio shack.

Fun Run-Walk and Bike Cruise – 9:45 a.m., Wednesday, April 16 (Quad): This event will emphasize foot- and pedal-power as alternative modes of transportation that improve quality of life.

Official Proclamation, Welcoming Ceremony and Walking Meditation – 11 a.m., Wednesday April 16 (Quad): The Collin College Board of Trustees and mayor of Frisco will kickoff the festivities with the reading of the Earth Day Proclamation. Immediately following the Welcoming Ceremony, Brother ChiSing will lead a Walking Meditation.

Recycled Fashion Show –noon, Wednesday April 16 (Quad): Collin Theatre costume design students along with local vendors Counter Culture and Mavo Pavo will showcase renewable fashion.

Special Lectures – 11 a.m.-2 p.m., Wednesday, April 16 (Event Center)

Peace Corps Experiences – noon-1 p.m. Wednesday, April 16 (Event Center) presented by Jeremy Starritt, Environmental Educational Coordinator for the city of Frisco

A Faculty-Student Panel: “Who Gets the Fuel – Us or Them?” – 1-2 p.m., Wednesday, April 16 (Event Center): Panel will focus on the impacts of the inexpensive cars being made available and purchased by the masses in developing countries like India.
