What is a paramedic?

When someone dials 911, paramedics are first on the scene, handling automobile accidents, heart attacks, drownings, births, gunshot wounds, anything requiring immediate medical attention.

Paramedics provide pre-hospital trauma and advanced medical life support to sick and injured patients.  In addition to having basic EMT lifesaving skills, these professionals bring IV therapy, drug administration and airway management techniques to the scene. Paramedics work with physicians through direct radio contact to quickly diagnose and treat a host of life-threatening illnesses and injuries. In the field, they act as the doctor’s hands and eyes.

What kind of job could I get as a paramedic?

Paramedics work for fire departments, private or public ambulance services, other medical services or hospitals.  They work closely with firefighters to rescue and stabilize victims prior to transportation to a hospital.

What training is required to become a paramedic?

Under the Emergency Medical Services programs at CCCCD, students may choose between two academic training tracks to prepare for taking the Emergency Medical Technician – Paramedic (EMT-P) certification offered by the National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians:
