What is/are the humanities?

... the inclusive study of culture, which examines human creative endeavors from the dawn of human consciousness until now. The study of humanities encompasses visual and performing arts (painting, sculpture, theatre, music, dance, film, etc.), literature, architecture, philosophy, technology, religion, and mythology. In other words, the humanities explore what it means to be human.

Introduction to Humanities

Focuses on the study and appreciation of representative samples of visual and performing arts, music, and religions of various world cultures. The exploration of interrelationships of the arts and their philosophies emphasizes the nature of humankind and our need to create.

Introduction to Mexican-American Studies

Investigates the field of Mexican-American/Chicano/a Studies from its inception to the present. This interdisciplinary survey is designed to introduce students to the salient cultural, economic, educational, historical, political, and social aspects of the Mexican-American/Chicano/a experience.

Mexican-American Fine Arts Appreciation

An examination of Mexican-American/Chicano/a artistic expressions in the visual and performing arts. The course will deal with the exploration of the artistic forms that make up sensibilities of the contemporary Mexican American artist. Includes a survey of Mexican art from pre-Columbian times to the present, including Chicano folk and contemporary art, and the study of the styles and methods of Mexican American music and dance. The course will begin with an introduction to the dynamic social and historical forces that have shaped the experience of Mexicans in the United States. The second half of the course will examine Mexican art and photography from the 19th century to contemporary expressions.

Cultural Identity in the U.S.

Emphasizes the cultural, historic, social, and/or economic aspects of various U.S. cultures. Explores human values from perspectives such as national origin, language, race, and religion. May investigate these values through art, performance, and intellectual life.

World Cultures

Study of human civilizations throughout history. Addresses the various guises and manifestations of individual and cultural identity as expressed in the artistic, performative, and intellectual lives of peoples throughout the world.

Honors Humanities

The Honors Institute offers students with a GPA of 3.5 or above the opportunity to participate in lively discussions with classmates and teachers. The Honors Humanities course enhances student learning by exploring the city as text as well as involving them in creative endeavors. Moreover, the Honors Institute qualifies students to apply for scholars-in-residence scholarships.

Learning Communities

Learning communities weave together two or more classes to address a common topic or theme. This innovative approach allows students to interact with a small group of classmates in an attempt to develop a greater understanding of particular disciplines through interdisciplinary study.
