I believe that a true education instills not just knowledge but a love of learning.  Ideally, the humanities class that students take with me should be an odyssey, an exploration of the worlds both inside and outside of every human being.  The study of the humanities should make these worlds larger and better--worlds with more freedom, more integrity, and more passion.

In over twenty years of college teaching, I have taught speech, English, art history, philosophy, film, and humanities; and I have taught a variety of student populations at private and public colleges and universities.  I'm fortunate to be able to do work that I love:  teaching humanities at Collin County Community College .

In a sense, my teaching career is an extension of my education, for I have learned a great deal from my students.  My university education began in Illinois, where I earned a B.A. and an M.A. in Speech Communication from Eastern Illinois University. I also spent a fellowship year studying film at Northwestern University in Chicago. My Ph.D. is in Humanities from The University of Texas at Dallas, where my dissertation dealt with autobiography.
