Peggy BrownWhen I walked across the stage to receive my AA at Richland College in 1978, I had achieved more formal education than any other member of my family. Had my parents lived, they would have glowed when I received my Ph.D. in 1990 at UTD. By that time, I had entered the challenging (and rewarding) world of teaching. It was in 1983 that I walked into a classroom and stood in front. That was at Brookhaven College. I may have taught those 12 students a little about Greek literature (after sleepless nights of preparation), but they taught me the joy of learning. Since then I have studied the art of teaching, which may be best expressed in the words of the Duchess of Windsor (she spoke of the secret to a long and happy life, but I think the idea suits teaching): “Fill what's empty, empty what's full, and scratch where it itches.” |
