Business Management
61credit hours required to graduate (depending on
specialization):
Business Management Specialization
Criminal
Justice Specialization
Business Management is no longer a field just for people who desire
to be managers. Today, organizations are empowering all individuals,
giving them more responsibility and requiring more knowledge.
Collin's Business Management degree strives
to provide students the ability to relate with others, the skills to work
in a team, the knowledge to initiate change, and the experience to solve
problems. Topics include basic management foundations and theories, human
resource management, human relations training, financial management, and
capital acquisition skills.
This degree is also excellent for people who wish to major in another
field but need some business and management skills. All organizations
have a business approach which requires that individuals be adept at planning,
organizing, leading, and control the many activities that accompany a
successful business venture.
The Criminal Justice specialization is
designed for law enforcement officials who want to be promoted in rank
but lack the sufficient transferable course work in a related field.
The program will transfer directly to the University of North Texas or
other universities with similar programs and will prepare officers to
be promoted into supervision/management positions. This specialization
applies specifically to the law enforcement officer and is uniquely different
from Collin's other program in Criminal Justice program which focuses more
in corrections management.
Students planning to transfer to a college or university should check
with a Collin academic advisor prior to beginning this program.
Career Opportunities
Every business and organization has leaders and/or people who perform
leadership tasks. Therefore, this degree can apply to any field including
government and public service. There are also five certificate plans
that are designed to meet the needs of anyone in quick need of skills
provided by credit classes. Students enrolled in these certificate
plans do not need to complete the TASP exam prior to enrollment.
Project Management Certificate
The Collin County Community College District is offering three new courses
in Project Management as part of its overall path of study towards an
Associate of Applied Science (AAS) degree in Business Management, or
as a separate certificate program. The program was initiated at
the request of human resource directors at several local telecom companies
wishing to offer their workers, who may not have college credit or project
management knowledge, a chance to overcome these hurdles and open up greater
opportunities for their career progression. It is taught in a college
credit courses (six courses overall) that are available to anyone who
wishes to take them. The courses are designed to teach many important
aspects of project implementation and management, such as teamwork, leadership,
human relations, change, negotiations and conflict resolution, quality
control, risk, and scope, both in theory and in application.
Students choosing the certificate route may apply their project management
skills immediately to assist themselves in acquiring better paying jobs,
or they can substitute these Project Management courses for other
management courses on the Associate of Applied Science (AAS) degree
with a major in Business Management. Once earned, the AAS degree
can then be transferred to many area universities such as the University
of North Texas, Amberton University, or Dallas Baptist University where
students can enroll in one of several Bachelor of Applied Arts and Sciences
degrees.
Project Management courses will follow the information used in the PMBOK
(Project Management Book of Knowledge) and will assist students in passing
their Project Management licensing exams.
Off-Site Certificate & Degree Opportunities
Collin's Business Management department also has an educational certificate
program for students employed with companies such as Target, Mervyns,
Kone, and Countrywide Mortgage and teaches those classes off-site at company
locations as well as the regular courses taught at the Spring Creek Campus
and at the Preston Ridge Campus.

Marketing
Marketing incorporates professional education courses to prepare individuals
for career paths with retail or wholesale organizations, profit or non-profit
service organizations, governmental agencies, and academic institutions.
This program is designed to give a thorough background in aspects of
marketing and to provide methods for improving skills for people already
employed in a marketing career. Marketing students who have questions
