Entering Freshman Students

Welcome to Collin County Community College District Nursing Program. We are delighted you have chosen CCCCD to begin your nursing career. Please review the following information.

Upon acceptance into the ADN program, students are required to:

  1. Purchase liability insurance through the school.
  2. Purchase school-approved uniforms for clinical experiences.
  3. Obtain current CPR certification (Health Provider) via the American Heart Association.
  4. Have the Dental Form and Pre-Entrance Medial Form completed by your dentist and physician.
  5. Complete all required immunizations and provide copies of immunization records.
  6. Complete a TB (Tuberculosis) skin test and provide a copy of the results annually.
  7. Agree to a criminal background check.
  8. Complete drug screening at the student’s expense on a date specified by Director of Nursing prior to the start of school.
  9. Health Insurance documentation.  All nursing students must provide documentation of having a health insurance policy.

Students are encouraged to complete as many of the required and support courses as possible prior to enrolling in Nursing I.

THE NURSING EXPERIENCE

Nursing is a demanding but rewarding career. Upon acceptance into the nursing program, you must make a commitment to hard work and study to be successful in the program. The following suggestions are strongly recommended:

  1. Limit full-time work to fewer hours so that you have time to study nursing.
  2. Complete as many of the support courses as possible before starting the nursing courses.
  3. Allow at least 10 hours per week to study and prepare for class and clinical.
  4. Get a good night's sleep before the clinical, class, or learning experience.

 

 

Several hospitals are assigned for your clinical experience as you matriculate through the curriculum. You will be given the opportunity to experience nursing at the various clinical sites, as space allows: Medical Center of Plano,  Medical Center of McKinney, Baylor Medical Center at Frisco, Life Care of Plano, Richardson Regional Medical Center, Presbyterian Hospital of Plano, Baylor Hospital of Garland, Baylor Medical Center of Plano, Presbyterian Hospital of Allen, Terrell State Hospital, Children's Medical Center, Centennial Medical Center, Medical City of Dallas and Select Specialty. Each semester your clinical experiences consist of 1 to 2 days of hospital experience as well as 1  to 2 days of classroom instruction. Some learning experiences will also take place in the simulated laboratory at the Central Park Campus where all nursing classes are conducted. At this time, all clinical experiences and classroom instruction are scheduled in the morning. The number of contact hours each week for clinical and classroom instruction are as follows:

First Semester
RNSG 1360 Clinical 4.5 hours, 2 days/week
RNSG 1523 Classroom 5 hours, 1 day/week
RNSG 1219 Skills Lab 4 hours/week
 
Second Semester
RNSG 1461 Clinical 6 hours, 2 days/week or 12 hours 1 day/wk
RNSG 2504 Classroom 5 hours, 1 day/week
RNSG 1229 Skills Lab 4 hours/week
 
Third Semester
RNSG 2460 Clinical  6 hours, 2 days/week or 12 hours 1 day/wk
RNSG 2514 Classroom 5 hours, 1 day/week
 
Fourth Semester
RNSG 2561 Clinical 7.5 hours, 2 days/week plus transition
RNSG 2535 Classroom 5 hours, 1 day/week
RNSG 2207 Classroom 2 hours/week


Opportunities are also provided for students to attend nursing seminars and conventions, conduct nursing rounds, and participate in various activities on campus and in the community. Flexibility is encouraged!
Nursing scholarships are also available to qualifying students currently enrolled in a nursing course.
