Professor David Glosson
Artist Statement
When I photograph, I try to go into the landscape with no preconceived ideas or
plans regarding what I expect to find. I typically avoid viewing other photographers’
images of the area. I avoid preparing a shooting list which might prevent me from
noticing other potential shots. I never attempt to locate the exact spot where a
photograph that I have seen was shot. As I walk through the desert terrain, I stop
often to look around. By approaching photography this way, I am freed from notions
that prevent me from exploring the topology.
Edward Abbey said “…the desert is stimulating, exciting, exacting; I feel no temptation to sleep or to relax into occult dreams but rather an opposite effect which sharpens and heightens vision, touch, hearing, taste and smell.”
