Collin College’s associate of applied science degree in biotechnology was granted program recognition by the Texas Skill Standards Board (TSSB). The program is recognized for integrating into the curriculum the Biotechnology and Biomedical Skill Standards for Research, Development, and Manufacturing. Collin College also received an incentive check for $1,000 from the Texas State Leadership Council which awards colleges that successfully integrate TSSB recognized skill standards into technical programs.

Collin College’s business office received the Certificate of Achievement for Excellence in Financial Reporting for its Comprehensive Annual Financial Report for the Fiscal Year ended August 31, 2007. The Certificate was awarded by the Government Finance Officers Association of the United States and Canada. Collin College is the only community college in Texas to have received the award for 11 consecutive years.

The nursing department is one of nine programs selected to participate in a national research study conducted by the National League for Nursing, Laerdal and the American Heart Association. The aim of the study is to examine different approaches to learning Basic Life Support (BLS) and Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS).

Lupita Tinnen, professor of photography, showcased work in “Viewfinder: New Images from Texas Artists” hosted by FotoFest and the Houston Center for Photography from November-January. The show is taken from the Talent in Texas Exhibition Series, which focuses on photo-related works by artists working and living in Texas. She also had photography in the “Everything’s Going to be Okay: Young Latino Artists 13” at the Mexic-Arte Museu in Austin in November.

Debbie White, professor of psychology, and former Collin College student Megan Parker co-authored “Service-Learning through Philanthropy in a Psychology of Death and Dying Course,” which was published in The Journal for Civic Commitment. The article titled describes the process and results of a pilot program that allowed for student creativity and leadership in applying academic theories and concepts from the course to a student philanthropy through service-learning project.

John Glass, professor of sociology, published “Behavior Analytic Grounding of Sociological Social Constructionism” in Behavior Analyst Today magazine. Glass served as a volunteer for the United Way ’s Outcome Measurement review process during fall 2008. Professor Glass assessed the adequacy of more than 20 evaluation plans for the United Way of Collin County.

Dr. Nell Ard, director of Nursing, co-authored an article titled “Summary of the Survey on Clinical Education in Nursing” in Nursing Education Perspectives, the official journal of the National League for Nursing. Also, Dr. Ard was appointed to the National League for Nursing’s Public Policy Committee for 2009-2012. This committee serves in an advisory role to the NLN Board of Governors.

Collin College honored their 2008 Living Legends Nov. 8. The honorees were Marilyn Brooks, Mary Nelle Cummins, Rutledge Haggard and Don Dillard. In its sixth year, the event supports the Living Legends Scholarship Fund, which provides scholarships for deserving Collin College students.

Mark Kaufmann, professor of commercial art, won a 2008 Lone Star Emmy as executive producer of Allen City TV’s “The Adventures of … David Chicken.” The Lone Star Emmy awards, presented by The Texas Chapter of the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences, honor the best television programming in Texas ’ 19 television markets.

Civic Ventures, a leading thinktank on boomers and work, has published “Pathways to Encore Careers” and features Collin College’s program to help laid-off and retired boomers with math backgrounds retrain as high school math teachers. The program of Collin’s Center for Teaching, Learning and Professional Development, was funded by the MetLife Foundation/Civic Ventures Community College Encore Career Grant.

Collin College ’s Sigma Chi Eta will receive the Raymie E. McKerrow Chapter of the Year Award at the National Community Association. Sigma Chi Eta is the national communications honor society. The award was bestowed on a chapter that best exemplifies the goals of the NCA including recognizing and foster academic achievement in communication studies, stimulating interest in communications, promoting professional development, providing a stage to exchange ideas and explore options for community college students who plan to transfer to a university.

Collin Colleges’ public relations department won four National Council for Marketing and Public Relations awards at its district 4 conference in Wyoming in October. The winners were: gold for the Connections newsletter; gold for Heather Darrow’s feature story, “Surmounting Walls with Educational Footholds”; bronze for Mark Robinson’s feature story, “The Road is His Research”; and bronze for the summer 2008 movie commercial.

Dallas Baptist University became the 10th college or university to enter a pre-admission agreement with Collin College providing an exclusive and easy means of transfer to earn a bachelor’s degree after completing one’s core credits. The agreement was signed in October 2008.

Collin College ’s EMT and paramedic programs’ pass rates were compared to colleges and universities in the state in Texas EMS magazine. EMT students had a 91 percent pass rate and paramedic students had a 100 percent pass rate, both outscoring the national and state averages.

Eighteen dental hygiene students and three faculty advisors attended the Texas Dental Hygiene Educator's Association/ Student Dental Hygiene Association annual meeting held in Houston , Feb. 5-7. One of the table clinics presented by Collin College students at the professional meeting won second place. The table clinic was titled "VAP, Risk Factors and Prevention,” researched by Emily Turner and Matt Shipley. Turner received a certificate of recognition. The students also entered a fashion show with other dental hygiene schools and the Collin College team of Elise Hall, Bridget Blaylock and Tawny Nunez placed third with a prom dress made from dental hygiene materials.

Collin College ’s Alpha Mu Tau Chapter of Phi Theta Kappa won several awards at the Texas Regional Convention in Waco . Bethany Allen, president of Collin College ’s chapter, was inducted into the Texas Hall of Honor for Members. Daniel Sanabria, chapter vice president for Leadership, was chosen by International as the Distinguished Officer for the state of Texas . Advisor and Professor Angela Putman was inducted into the Texas Hall of Honor for Advisors and the Alpha Mu Tau Chapter won the Continued Excellence Award. This award is given to the top chapter in Texas that has consistently been a top chapter for several years in a row. It is the second highest award in the Texas Region.

Jerry E. Smith, professor of art, was one of 15 text book reviewers for Thompson Higher Education's 1st edition of "Gardner's Concise History of Art." Smith's artwork was chosen from among a thousand nationwide entries for the 2008 Texas National, held by Stephen F. Austin University. His work "Weighs of the Heart" received one of seven awards from the 89 artists comprising the competition, judged this year by internationally known artist Roger Shimomura. Smith also had work shown at the Texas Visual Arts Association National Exhibition in Irving, the Axis Gallery National Exhibition in Sacremento, the Alter/Altar Invitational Theme Exhibition at Grayson College, "El Corezan" Invitational Exhibition, Bathhouse Cultural Art Centre in Dallas, and "Haute Art" Art Auction, hosted by the Plano Art Centre.

Destination College and Cougar Smart Money co-sponsored a new event, Cougar Town, May 7, at the Spring Creek Campus Conference Center. More than 200 high school students participated in the hands-on simulation in which they learned the value of education and its effect on potential earnings. Students took on careers, salaries, families and the associated financial responsibilities of the adult world including taxes, groceries, housing, transportation, and child care, all in a two and one-half hour simulation.

Collin College’s Nursing Program has received Continuing Approval with Commendation from the Board of Nursing. The commendation is for the program’s 98.28 percent pass rate on the 2007 NCLEX-RN examination.

Sally Jayne Gilpin, associate professor of English, received notification that her paper “The Wife’s Lament and the Elusive Abode” has been accepted for presentation at the 2008 International Medieval Congress, set for July 7-10 in Leeds, England. Professor Gilpin will also serve as a session chair.

Jackie Langford, Simulation Lab director, published “Anaphylaxis,” in the May/June issue of Texas EMS magazine, a publication of the Texas Department of State Health Services. The article presents an in-depth review of anaphylaxis, its effects on body systems, clinical presentation, patient management and medications used in treatment and is offered as a mail-in continuing education course for those certified in EMS.
