More than 225 business people, educators and students attended the 8th annual Biotechnology Educators Conference at the Spring Creek Campus Conference Center in June.

Destination College and Cougar Smart Money co-sponsored a new event, Cougar Town, May 7, at the Spring Creek Campus Conference Center. More than 200 high school students participated in the hands-on simulation in which they learned the value of education and its effect on potential earnings. Students took on careers, salaries, families and the associated financial responsibilities of the adult world including taxes, groceries, housing, transportation, and child care, all in a two and one-half hour simulation.

The Knowledge is Power lecture series hosted about 200 attendees during its April 2008 presentation, "Farming for Fuel: Will Biofuels Work?” at the Preston Ridge Campus.

The 16th annual Collin Jazz Festival attracted more than 600 attendees and featured special guests saxophonist Kim Richmond and trumpeter Clay Jenkins.

Dr. Joan Fujimura, professor of sociology at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, spoke March 4 at the Spring Creek Campus Conference Center. Dr. Fujimura was the third part of the college's 2007-08 Distinguished Speaker Series. She presented a lecture titled, "Epistemology in Action: Knowledge Production in Context." About 300 people attended the lecture.

More than 500 people attended the Arabian Nights event sponsored by the Middle Eastern Student Association Feb. 23 at the Spring Creek Campus.

More than 550 people came to the Spring Creek Campus to listen to the 2007-08 Scholar-in-Residence Billy Collins Feb. 27. The former U.S. Poet Laureate read some of his work and answered questions from the audience.

About 350 parents and students attended the first University Pre-Admission Workshop in February. The event included representatives from each of Collin College's nine university pre-admission partners.

The Collin College Foundation annual fundraiser -- Collin Cabaret -- raised a record of more than $250,000 for scholarships. The event had Parisian bistro theme and featured a number of current and former Collin College dance, choral and music students performing.

More than 300 individuals attended the second annual Salsa Stand-Off at the Spring Creek Campus atrium in February.

Collin College and Austin College agreed upon a special pre-admission agreement in January 2008. Austin College became the ninth such partner with Collin College.

Dr. Rosemary Karr, professor of developmental mathematics, accepted the U.S. Professor of the Year award in November at a Washington D.C. ceremony sponsored by the Council for Advancement and Support of Education (CASE) and the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching.

More than 1,000 people came to hear author and activist Loung Ung speaker as part of the Book-in-Common program in October at the Spring Creek Campus Conference Center. The event set a record for attendance for any one Collin College event. Ung is the author of "First They Killed My Father: A Daughter of Cambodia Remembers," a memoir of her survival during the Khmer Rouge's reign in her home country.

Several hundred students and faculty from around the country gathered at Collin College in October for the second annual Psychology Synergy Conference sponsored by Psi Beta National Honor Society. The conference featured lectures by noted researchers Dr. David Buss and Dr. Helen Fisher.

About 200 people attended the Family Violence Conference at the Spring Creek Campus Conference Center in October. Speakers addressed topics such as family justice centers, dual arrest and intimate partner violence, family roles, substance abuse trends, trauma intervention, youth and sexual behavior, self mutilation, and many other timely subjects.

About 175 students, faculty and staff attended a guest lecture by Roger Newman, a professor at Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism, spoke on civil liberties, surveillance and terrorism at the Preston Ridge Campus September 2007. Dr. Newman is also author of a biography of Supreme Court Justice Hugo Black, which won the Scribes Book Award and was a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize.

Collin College announced that it will partner with universities to offer junior- and senior-level college courses as well as a graduate degree program at a new site in McKinney, the Higher Education Center. In addition to the Collin College Higher Education Center, the new campus would house selected administrative departments now located at the Courtyard Center for Professional and Economic Development.

All Collin College broke ground on its expansion of the Central Park Campus in McKinney Aug. 28. The expansion will include a 73,000-square-foot Jeffersonian-style library and classroom space, a 20,000-square-foot student development and bookstore space, four new science labs, a surgical technology lab and a parking garage. The current library will be converted to classrooms and offices and will be home to the Learning and Enhanced Academic Performance (LEAP) Center, where students can receive assistance with algebra, biology, physics, chemistry, writing and more.
