College Honors
The Teacher Certification Program was featured in the July/July 2008 issue of Community College Journal regarding the encore career initiative. The article describes the program as “an innovative program to prepare and certify new teachers over the age of 50.” Funded through a grant from Civic Ventures and the MetLife Foundation, it is designed to meet critical community needs.

Collin College’s Nursing Program has received Continuing Approval with Commendation from the Board of Nursing. The commendation is for the program’s 98.28 percent pass rate on the 2007 NCLEX-RN examination.

The Collin College women’s tennis team finished fifth for the second year in a row at the NJCAA Division I National Championships in May 2008.

Collin College Continuing Education's fall 2007 and spring 2008 schedules placed first in the Texas Administrators of Continuing Education for Community/Junior Colleges marketing awards in Austin April 23-25.

The Council for Advancement and Support of Education (CASE) awarded Collin College with the gold in the Periodicals: Newsletters, Tabloids and Newspapers category for the fall and winter Connections newsletters.

The National Junior College Athletic Association’s National Meeting awarded Collin College the Men's National Tennis Tournament for another three years. The NJCAA said that Collin puts on a first class national tournament and that teams enjoy coming to Plano.

The Phi Theta Kappa chapter was given the Leadership Hallmark Award, the Scholarship Hallmark Award and the Distinguished Chapter Award (given to the top 25 chapters in the world) at the Phi Theta Kappa International Convention held in Philadelphia in April.

The Collin College Continuing Education schedules for fall 2007 and spring 2008 won first place in the "Schedule of Classes" category of the Texas Administrators of Continuing Education (TACE) awards.

Collin College's Alpha Mu Tau Chapter of Phi Theta Kappa National Honor Society was named the Most Distinguished Chapter in Texas at the regional convention in Fort Worth in March. This is the highest honor for any chapter in the state.

The Collin Theatre Center recently won a number of Column Awards, a non-profit Dallas-Fort Worth theater organization. The winners were: staff member Andrew Duckworth, Best Sound Design of a Play; student Brittany Noll, Best Stage Manager of a Play; professor Gail Cronauer, Best Actress in a Play (equity); Arianna Movassaugh (former student), Best Actress in a Play (non-equity); associate faculty member Gregory Lush, Best Actor in a Play (equity); current student Lindsay Neinast, Best Featured Actress in a Play (non-equity); staff member Mark Mullino, Best Music Director of a Musical; professor Robin Armstrong, Best Costume Design of a Musical; and associate faculty member Laura McMeley, Best Lighting Design of a Play.

The Collin Dance Ensemble performed for the sixth time in its history during the 2008 Gala Awards at the South Central Region of the American College Dance Festival. In addition, the ensemble was chosen as alternates for the National Gala Festival in New York City.

Collin College was named to the 2007 President’s Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll for the second straight year for its dedication toward community service.

For the second consecutive year, the college’s purchasing department has been awarded the Achievement of Excellence in Procurement Award from the National Purchasing Institute. The award is achieved by demonstrating excellence in procurement by obtaining a high score on a rating of standardized criteria. The program is designed to measure innovation, professionalism, e-procurement, productivity and leadership attributes.

The Collin College public relations department won six 2007 Medallion Awards from District IV National Council for Marketing and Public Relations conference in Galveston. The gold award winners were: Fall 2007 Movie Theatre Commerical in the Video/PSA category; Dance Fusion Program in the Brochure/Flyer 2 category; “A Moving Experience” by Dana Schmitz in the Feature Article/General News Story category. Silver Medallions went to: July Cougarcast for Innovation in Technology category; “Love Comes in Thin Packages” by Heather Darrow in the Feature Article/General News Story category; and Wanted: Governor of Texas poster in the Poster 1 category.

The Global EDGE Tech Prep Consortium received an award for their use of technology in the promotion of Tech Prep at the National Career Pathways Network Conference in Louisville.

Collin College’s Alpha Mu Tau Chapter of Phi Theta Kappa has fulfilled all requirements to the distinction of being named a “Five-Star Chapter.” In addition to receiving recognition regionally, the chapter and college will receive international recognition, its achievements will be cited on the Phi Theta Kappa Society website, and it will be recognized at the organization’s International Convention.

Global EDGE has won the Promotion of Tech Prep Award from the National Association of Tech Prep Leaders. Our submission was based on the use of podcasting to reach students and teachers regarding tech prep. The award will be presented in October at the national Tech Prep conference in Louisville, Ken.
