PLACEMENT TESTING (Basic Skills Assessment) *Required*

Reading: Students who have passed TSI reading, or are exempt from TSI requirements by SAT, ACT, or TAKS, are not required to take Collin's reading assessment.

Math: Students planning to enroll in a math course who have not successfully completed a college math class must take the math assessment. Collin will accept developmental course work from other institutions to meet prerequisites for math. A grade report or transcript is required for proof of prerequisites.

If a student has a score of 270 or higher on the THEA then that student may enroll in Mathematics: MATH 1314, 1324, 1332, 1342, or 1414.

Writing: Students who are exempt from TSI requirements by ACT, SAT, or TAKS scores may enroll in ENGL 1301 without assessment.  In addition, students who have completed the THEA writing with a score of  240 or higher and a THEA reading score of 230 or higher or pass the TSI writing with a writing sample score of six (6) and a passing reading score (college level) will not be required to take the writing assessment prior to registering for ENGL 1301 .   Otherwise, students may be required to take the Collin writing and/or reading assessment for placement in the appropriate level English course and should consult with Academic Advising, the Testing Center, or the Division Office for placement requirements.

 

CREDIT BY EXAM

Collin awards college credit on the basis of a variety of departmental and nationally available examinations. The examinations utilized are:

  • The Advanced Placement Examination (AP) of the College Board
  • Departmental examinations
  • Certified Professional Secretaries Examination
  • Portfolio Review
  • The College Level Examination Program (CLEP) of the College Board

Credit by examination is subject to the following general limitations:

  1. Must be a currently enrolled student or enrolled within the past year.
  2. A maximum of 18 semester hours of credit earned by examination at this institution or elsewhere may be transcripted.
  3. Credit by examination will not be transcripted until the student has accumulated six semester hours at Collin.
  4. Credit earned by examination may not be earned in any course for which the student has previously received a grade either at this institution or elsewhere. (Grades of "F" are included).
  5. Credits earned by examination are not included in the computation of the grade point average.
  6. Some departmental examinations may require a portfolio review of work before credit is awarded.

Credit will be awarded according to the policies in place at the time of this publication.
