Certificate Information

Q:  Will my teaching certificate be the same as those who have gone through a traditional teacher education program at a university or college?
A: Yes. Certificates granted through the Collin County Community College District (Collin) TCP are identical to certificates granted through traditional teacher education programs. The certificate enables recipients to teach in the certificate area anywhere in Texas.

Q:  What areas of certification does Collin offer?
A:  Certification Areas

Q: After I have completed Collin’s training program and passed the required Texas Examinations of Educators Standards (TExES) tests does that mean I’m a certified teacher?
A: No. You must successfully complete one year of  teaching practicum as a teacher intern on a probationary certificate. Your school district and the Collin teacher certification program must also recommend you for certification at the end of your intern year.
The program offers a second option to complete this practicum through student teaching.

Q: What if I want to be certified in elementary education?
A:  Collin offers elementary and secondary teaching certificates. Elementary (EC-4) teaching certificates are combined with English as a second Language (ESL) specialization or Bilingual specialization.
All potential applicants are required to attend an Information Session to learn more about the program. Pre-registration is required.

 

Q: What if I have an out-of-state teaching certificate?
A: Contact the Texas State Board for Educator Certification for out-of-state teaching certificate questions.

Q: What if I have been convicted of a crime?
A: In accordance with Article 6252-12c, Texas Civil Statutes, the Commissioner of Education may refuse to issue a teaching certificate for persons convicted of a felony or misdemeanor crimes, which directly relate to the duties and responsibilities of the teaching profession. Applicants for Texas Certificates will be screened for a record of felony or misdemeanor convictions through the Texas Department of Public Safety. Potential applicants should contact the Certification Officer regarding concerns about this Texas requirement.

Also, local ISDs conduct criminal record checks on individuals seeking employment and / or access into the schools, which will include your field-based experiences. Potential applicants should contact local ISDs regarding concerns about their criminal convictions.
