Mentoring Program

Q: What is the Mentoring Program?
A: The Collin County Community College District (Collin) mentoring program will be required during the first year of teaching / intern year. The mentoring program will include:

Classroom visits by an assigned mentor
Reflective journal entries
Continued development of the professional teaching portfolio
Evaluation and assessment of performance in the classroom (Formative and Summative)
4 hours of monthly continued professional development workshops

The intern will be under the direct, ongoing, and shared supervision of the building principal (or administrative alternative), a Collin mentor liaison, and a school site mentor. Issuance of permanent teacher certification at the end of the intern year will be contingent upon evaluations.

Q: Is an intern appraised by the Professional Development Appraisal System (PDAS)?
A: Yes. State Board of Education (SBEC) rules require that you have satisfactory ratings on the Professional Development Appraisal System (PDAS) to be recommended for certification.

Q: Can the intern be designated as a teacher of record?
A: Yes. The intern will be assigned as a teacher of record and required to teach a full load. Early in the fall (October), Texas Educator's Agency (TEA) will furnish the district with documentation, which will identify the intern as a provisionally certified teacher, thereby confirming the teacher-of-record status.

Q: Who supervises the Collin intern during their intern year at the school district?
A: The intern will be under the direct, ongoing and shared supervision of the building principal, (or administrative alternative), a Collin mentor liaison, and a school site mentor. This cadre of individuals will provide instructional and professional support and assistance to the intern.

Q: During the intern year am I paid a salary?
A: Yes, once hired by a school district, you are eligible for first-year teacher's pay. As with any employment, it is the individual's responsibility to inquire as to salary and benefits. Once hired, you will be: on a probationary teaching contract; considered the teacher of record and an employee of that school district.
