Program Overview
Collin College 's TCP program is intensive, fast-tracked, and modular based. Classes are held on evenings and weekends to accommodate a variety of schedules. For added flexibility, students have the option to enter the - Secondary certification program in the fall, spring or summer
- Elementary certification program in the fall or spring
In addition, students in the program may choose one of two options to complete the program requirements through
- Internship or
- Student teaching
All TCP classes are taught by experienced master educators retired from their education careers, or currently teaching in the Texas public school system

PROGRAM REQUIREMENTS:
Individuals who are uncertified and are planning to enter the teaching field for the first time:
Individuals seeking initial certification and not employed by an independent school district will enroll in a teacher certification program, which will provide the background in educational philosophy, theory, pedagogy, instructional technology, and best teaching practices to succeed in the classroom
Program Requirements Prior to Teaching:
Secondary level certifications:
- 24 contact hours of Content Pedagogy training
- 40 contact hours of training in Effective Teaching Practices
- 60 contact hours of Pedagogy & Professional Responsibilities training
- 20 hours of Early Field-based Experiences and journal reflections
- Take the Pedagogy & Professional Responsibilities (PPR) and content area TExES exams
Elementary level certifications:
- 40 contact hours of training in Developmentally Appropriate Practices
- 60 contact hours of training in Teaching Reading
- 40 contact hours of training in Effective Teaching Practices
- 88 contact hours of Pedagogy & Professional Responsibilities training
- 20 hours of Early Field-based Experiences and journal reflections
- 60 contact hours of training in teaching English as a Second Language (ESL)
- 24 contact hours of training in Bilingual Education (for Bilingual certification )
- Take the Pedagogy & Professional Responsibilities (PPR), content area, ESL or Bilingual TExES exams
Program completion Options for certification:
Upon completion of this initial training, individuals will be eligible to teach in a Texas public school on a probationary teaching certificate. Collin College will maintain a list of TCP students available for employment, but each individual is responsible for obtaining their own employment.
First-Year Teaching (Internship):
- Employed full-time at an independent school district or TEA accredited private school
- First year of teaching under TCP program supervision (on a probationary teaching certificate)
- Teach in the content area of certification
- Required mentoring program
- 4 hours of monthly mentoring workshops
Alternately, students may choose to do one semester of student teaching to complete program requirements. The TCP program coordinator secures placements for student teachers in local school districts.
Student Teaching:
- Placed with a supervising teacher for 12 weeks full-time
- Required mentoring program
- 1.5 hours of weekly student teaching workshops
Emergency Certified Individuals:
If you are currently employed fulltime by a school district and are teaching with an emergency certificate, the TCP can help you obtain standard certification. You will be required to complete the same training in professional development and content-specific pedagogy as the uncertified individuals.
However, you may enroll in the program training and internship concurrently.
