CCCCD
CONTINUING EDUCATION EYES SPRING OPHTHALMOLOGY COURSE
December
9, 2004 - No one is keeping their eye on the medical field
like Collin County Community College District (CCCCD) Continuing
Education.
CCCCD Continuing Education is offering an ophthalmic assistant
course during the spring semester Tuesday and Thursday nights
from 7-9 p.m. at the Courtyard Center, 4800 Preston Park Blvd.
in Plano. The cost of the course is $1,895 and includes 30
sessions.
Ophthalmology is the study of the anatomy, functions, diseases
and treatments of the eye. The course also paves the way for
students to enter the field of optometry, the study and care
of the eye.
The course spans 60 hours of classroom time and 20 hours of
clinical experience. Procedures that will be covered in the
course include: taking medical histories, ocular anatomy and
physiology, taking visual acuities, color vision testing,
reading a patients prescription on a Lensometer, glaucoma
testing, clinical optics and contact lenses, principles of
fitting and adjusting eyeglasses, general medical knowledge,
optical instrument maintenance and the skills to assist in
minor eye care surgery. The class prepares student to take
the National Certification Exam offered by the Joint Commission
on Allied Health Professions in Ophthalmology.
"I think that the ophthalmic assistant course is an incredible
experience because instructor Dr. Scott McGregor is such an
excellent teacher. He approaches the course from the vantage
point that everyone there is a novice, and thus he takes you
from the bottom on up to make sure that you learn every facet
of the job," student and registered nurse Sandy Schwartz
said.
Once the course is completed, students must work in the field
of ophthalmology for one year before receiving their Certified
Ophthalmic Assistant Certification (COA).
"Since studying the human eye is my greatest interest
and love, I decided to take the ophthalmic assistant class
offered at Collin County Community College," student
Carol Coleman said. "I learned valuable information that
I feel can be used in many areas of my life."
