Visiting the Writing Center

Appointments and Walk-Ins

Call the campus center or stop by to make an appointment.

The SCC Writing Center also accepts walk-in appointments from 11a.m. - 2p.m. during long semesters.  Walk-in/mid-day appointment sheets are posted each morning by 9 a.m.; slots are available on a first-come basis.  You must sign up for these appointments in person.  No walk-in appointments are available during summer sessions.

What to Bring

Please bring all work you have written so far on the assignment, including a printed copy of your paper.  In addition, if you are working on a paper for a class, bring the assignment sheet. If you have not started writing yet, you are still welcome to visit the writing centers; we are happy to help you begin the writing process by practicing methods of invention, brainstorming, choosing a topic, and conducting research.

What to Expect

Writing Center staff can help students with any writing task, such as essays for classes across the curriculum, letters, short essay questions, college application essays, research papers, assessment reviews, and resumes.  We also provide help with grammar, punctuation, vocabulary, and documentation.

Our goal is to help you become a better writer. We do not guarantee better grades, nor do we proofread or edit essays for you. Instead, we are here to show you how you can invent, focus, revise, develop, proofread, and otherwise strengthen your own writing. We focus on your goals and use the specific writing assignment to practice strategies to meet these goals.

A Typical Consultation Will Include. . . .

After signing in, you and your consultant will discuss your writing assignment and determine your goals for the session. You will work together to achieve these goals.  Once again, the Writing Center is not a repair shop or an editing service; therefore, you should not expect a “quick fix” of any writing assignment.

At the conclusion of the consultation, the consultant will send a note to your instructor about the consultation. Most sessions last between 30 and 45 minutes.  Remember, the purpose of a writing consultation is to make you a better writer, not to help you receive a better grade on a particular assignment.
